Just Like A Normal Resume...Only Tastier
What if? My favorite question. A question that led to this strange masterpiece.
At the time, I was working at a specialty doughnut shop. The product is very high end and is served in the box pictured above. At the time of this idea, I was beginning to look for full-time entry level marketing jobs again. Pre-pandemic when I was looking, I was finding it very difficult to stand out among other applicants.
During one shift, I thought to myself that if I was applying for jobs within driving distance, I could bring doughnuts in to the office to introduce myself. At the very least, I'd be remembered as the "doughnut boy". As I was sitting on the idea, I started to ask myself "What if?". What if I also brought my resume? What if I brought my resume but put it inside the box? What if I custom printed a version of my resume and attached it to the inside lid?
Essentially, that's how it went. I told a couple people about the idea and they looked at me like I was a bit crazy (which is fair). "Oh, that's...interesting" was a common response. They didn't have the same vision as I did. I knew I could make it work. After plenty of trips to the Fed Ex Print Shop, and a little bit of super glue, it was finished.
I attempted to take photos with my iPhone, but the quality was not cutting it at all. So I called up a friend who just so happened to be a professional food photographer. Her talents really shined through as the photos turned out better than I could have asked for. Go look up @kaileeinthekitchen on Instagram if you're looking for a rockstar food photographer!
In the end I never actually brought them in person. I posted my pictures to LinkedIn, and it immediately drew interest. Two days after, I received a call and was offered a job doing exactly what I wanted. It seemed too good to be true, but after a couple weeks of talking it over, it seemed like the perfect fit. I accepted it.
Fast forward a few months and I love it. I am learning so much and have been given a lot of room to grow into the role. It has many challenges, but they are exciting challenges. They are forcing me to become a more confident and practiced professional. For that, I am incredibly grateful.
I had three goals when I set out on this campaign:
- Practice my digital marketing skills and build a portfolio that I can use to set myself apart from other applicants.
- Increase my visibility as an eligible candidate for digital marketing jobs.
- Get hired.
After about 2 months, I accomplished all three of those goals. I am very proud of my unorthodox job search. It has given me a new-found confidence in my ability as a marketer and creative thinker. I am excited to put my skills and abilities to work in my new role at Cut Pak Co. and see where this journey takes me.
Thanks for following along, and all the support I received. Check back in on my website every once-in-a-while. Who knows, I might have another crazy idea.
